YouTube - Valid resolutions!
YouTube is spreading a lot of confusion in terms of their resolutions. I also ran into this problem during the development of my next YouTube video. Which is going to be in the wide-screen format.
The first question that popped into my head was: “What resolution do I need to use for my project in order to for YouTube to display it as a wide-screen format at 16:9?”. Those are a heck of a lot of keywords and it seemed my GooglePowers were failing me!
To add to this confusion, they have information about some useable resolutions. However they fail to mention that other seemingly wide-screen resolutions will be displayed at 4:3 with black bars at the top and bottom.
Bellow I’ll show you a list, which contains all of the currently supported resolutions:
16:9 wide-screen aspect ratio:
640x360, 1280x720HD, 1920x1080HD
- make sure you are using square pixels in the export aspect ratio setting
The above resolutions are the only ones that will make your video fill out the entire wide-screen YouTube video player. The ones with HD will have an extra link called watch in HD. Making it possible for viewers to actually watch HD720 and HD1080 videos, when the uploaded source video was 1280x720 or higher.
Note that the first number divided by the second number should be 1.78
NOT WIDE-SCREEN:
640x420, 720x480, 960x720, 1440x1080
You will get black bars at the top and bottom if you upload in these resolutions
4:3 ascpect ratio:
640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1042 etc...
These resolutions will give you black bars on the side of your video. Most of the videos currently are uploaded in this format. I'm not sure, but I also think that these are not going to show you HD video’s if your video has a high resolution. YouTube will probably just shrink it down to 480x360.
Embedding 16:9 wide-screen videos:
The embedding code you can get from a video on the YouTube site is in 4:3 aspect ratio. The true wide-screen videos will be displayed exactly like the not “wide-screen ones”. Meaning you will get a black top and bottom bar in your embedded video.
I hope this information will help you out, as it was quite a hassle to get to the cold hard facts.

yeh youtube pretty much annoys the hell out of me with the random "upload aborted" crap... At least with google gears it works...
You could try installing Google Gears and add this to the upload link from YouTube:
http://upload.youtube.com/my_videos_upload?restrict=gears
I also had the same problem ever since they decided to kill off the bulk uploader. But with Gears installed and restrict=gears, it works once more...

It works, now all I need is a better upload. youtube keeps saying upload aborted, but I did no such thing :(
